Adopt-A-Creek

Given the recent tragedies with water quality across Ontario, the need to protect our water resources has never been greater. Many people are left wondering how such problems could take place in such an economically rich province as Ontario? While a specific answer to this question may be difficult, there are some simple solutions to providing long-term protection for our vital water resources.

One meaningful solution is through creek restoration. Creek restoration projects such as bank stabilization can provide a variety of useful environmental functions that:
Help to stabilize the banks to prevent soil erosion
Filter excess nutrients from fertilizers and manure
Help to prevent "manure borne disease organisms", such as e. coli and cryptosporidium from entering the stream
Create creek habitat including food and shelter for birds, butterflies, and small mammals.

The Woolwich Clean Waterways Group has been committed to promoting clean waterways throughout Woolwich Township since 1991. We work with volunteers and landowners to improve the health of Woolwich waterways through creek rehabilitation and bank stabilization projects. In order to enhance our work we are starting an Adopt-A-Creek program in the Township of Woolwich. We were wondering if your organization would be interested in participating in the program?

The aim of the program is to have existing service clubs adopt a section of a restoration site. This will help ensure the long-term success of these projects and allow our group to continue to initiate new creek restoration projects. We feel this is an excellent opportunity for your organization for several reasons:
Expand existing portfolio of community activities and outreach
Provide significant educational opportunities for service club members and the wider public
Make a significant contribution to the health of the Township
Start creating a common vision for the future
Relevant given the current water quality problems that have surfaced across Ontario

To make this program successful the following would be required of your organization:
  A multi-year commitment
One night (2 - 2.5 hours) commitment each month from April to October
Tasks include: watering trees (in dry times), clearing brush around trees, applying brush blankets, installing tree guards (training will be provided for these tasks), and additional tree planting

We supply the following:
  Training
  Tools and Materials

Creek restoration projects, like the ones that we have undertaken, are cornerstones to good protection of our water resources. However, in order to continue to push forward this important agenda we will need the help your organization. To join the program or for further information please call Joy at 664-3534 ext. 230
