Local Company Turns Toxic Waste into a Valued Resource

Where does your used oil go? Perhaps it goes to Safety Kleen in Breslau where it is cleaned and resold to be used in fire trucks, ambulances, bulldozers, and by the Canadian military. Safety Kleen cleans 175 million liters of used oil each year! As Dale Schofield, of Safety Kleen says, “Everything that comes in the gate is sold and reused - nothing goes to the landfill.” As the fourth largest lube oil producer in Canada, Safety Kleen employs 220 people at its Breslau plant and produces three products for sale: base lube oil, fuel oil, and asphalt extender which is used to make asphalt roads and shingles more flexible and durable. Industries like Safety Kleen have many challenges to face, along with their success at turning someone else’s garbage into profits. In our Community Survey, a few Breslau residents expressed continuing concern about odour and about the possibilities of harmful air and water pollution coming from the Safety Kleen site. A community liason committee has been formed and meets regularly with Safety Kleen to address concerns of residents. For more information call Safety Kleen at 1-800-265-2792 or 648-2291.
