Who Were the First People in Woolwich?

Many people think the Six Nations Native peoples lived here before us, but historians debate whether they actually lived in this particular area. The Mississauga people resided in Woolwich long before the Six Nations people ever immigrated here from New York. The Mississaugas lived a migratory life moving from Winter camp to Spring camp and so on. There are stories of European settlers coming to this area, finding “abandoned” Native peoples’ homes, and moving in. Unfortunately, the homes were usually one of the camps which the Mississaugas dwelled in every year but not every day. The Mississaugas grew crops in the meadowlands along the Conestogo where Captain Thomas Smith settled and farmed.
