Do You Feel Safe in Woolwich?

In June of 1997, Statistics Canada conducted a door-to-door survey of rural residents in Woolwich, Wellesley, Wilmot and North Dumfries Townships. 521 households were included in the survey, which asked a number of questions about safety.

Eight out of 10 people felt safe walking outside in the day. Six out of 10 felt safe about walking outside at night.

About 1 in 5 people reported they had been the victims of crime. Most had reported the crimes to the police.

In our area, 67% of people think that it is quite safe where they live, and they report that crime rates are low in their neighbourhood or rural district.

Many women do not feel safe within their own homes or in the workplace. Statistics Canada (1993) shows that 25% of all women have experienced violence at the hands of a current or past marital partner and 78% of assaults on women are by males who are known to them. Among women, 90% report receiving unwanted sexual attention on the job.
