At almost every turn in the road we can see how richly our township is endowed with beauty and abundance. Creeks and rivers flow among hills and forests, and through valleys and villages. Farm homes and barns together in sheltering groves, are surrounded by gently rolling foodlands of every growing height and hue. Pastoral vistas lift the spirit. This is a healing place, and our gratitude moves us to want to take care of it.

What we may not see or know is that Woolwich is still sustaining representative examples of flora and fauna that have all but disappeared from neighbouring townships. Our forests are the diminishing homes of porcupine, coyote, and even bobcat. Many of our woodlands have beautiful carpets of spring wildflowers including Twin Leaf, Green Dragon, Nodding Trillium, and Burning Bush.

Experience tells us that our health is intricately woven into the health of our environment - for good or ill. Humans are part of ecosystems: materials and energy flow freely between people and all the other parts of natural systems. We live in relationship with all life. We depend on the environment for our fundamental needs for water, food, and material shelter. Like breathing in and out, life is give and take with all around us.

We give-away our thanks to the earth
which gives us our home.
We give-away our thanks to the rivers and lakes
which give-away their water.
We give-away our thanks to the trees
which give-away fruits and nuts...
All beings on earth: the trees, the animals, the wind
and the rivers give-away to one another
so all is in balance...
