Big Box Store Dilemma

Woolwich Township Council had a very difficult decision to make during 1997-1998 when a proposal to establish ‘Big Box’ Stores (like Wal-Mart) was made for a previously zoned commercial/industrial lot at the edge of St. Jacob’s. Many people thought that the new business would provide jobs, give local people access to a wide range of consumer items and attract people from outside the community to Woolwich to eat in restaurants and shop at other local stores. Many others, however, were also very concerned. Numerous briefs and presentations were made to Council regarding people’s fears that the big box store would force existing locally owned and operated stores out of business, affect the rural character of the area, cause traffic and parking problems, and result in the destruction of one of the few remaining woodland habitats in the St. Jacob’s area. After much deliberation, Woolwich Council approved the general application. Due to a disagreement over servicing, Council is now dealing with a new proposal for alternative servicing. It is likely however, that a final decision will not be reached without an Ontario Municipal Board Hearing.
