Local Business is important to Woolwich Township. Stores in small communities are not just places to buy things, but also gathering spots -- places to meet friends and neighbours, discuss the weather and find out about local goings-on. Many businesses including the two local newspapers, are involved in sponsoring or supporting local sports and community events.
In Woolwich Township, there are over 120 manufacturing industries, ranging from small on-farm operations employing fewer than 5 people to large multi-faceted operations, such as Martin’s Mills in Elmira, which employs 300 people and Uniroyal in Elmira, which employs 260 people. In addition, there are literally hundreds of home-based micro-businesses, larger retailers, and service businesses spread across the township, including Home Hardware in St. Jacob’s which employs over 800 people. The Elmira and Woolwich Chamber of Commerce has over 246 members. The Woolwich Business Improvement Association has 120 members.
WEDAC Survey
The Woolwich Economic Development Association Committee (WEDAC) carried out a survey of 50 local businesses in the Fall of 1998. The survey was very well received by the business owners. In general, the owners were optimistic about their futures. They made numerous suggestions on how to improve the business environment in Woolwich. These suggestions and other results from the survey will be shared at an upcoming community meeting.
