Landmarks and Facilities Make Woolwich Home
Woolwich Township has been my home for most of my life. After travelling and living away from Woolwich Township, I have noticed distinct characteristics of our community that help to make up my sense of home. For example, I realized that our local landscape has left quite an impression on me. Rolling hills, river flats, farmers’ fields, maple woodland, and quiet streams all remind me of home and help connect me to the place where I grew up. While I can easily view the landscape from a car window, I have found that adventure lies close at hand on the extensive network of local trails. In less than an hour, I can meander along a corn field, overlook the Grand River from quite a height, and walk through dense woodlands. I like the idea of shared and respected trails where cities are linked to rural areas, communities are linked to each other and people are linked to nature in their own backyard. The trails have provided a place to meet with friends, to get exercise, or to simply find solitude after a busy week.
Other characteristics of home, for me, come from memories of childhood activities such as looking for minnows in the Canagagigue in Bolender Park, swimming lessons in Elmira Pool, and class trips to the downtown library. These landmarks and facilities have contributed to my sense of community and home.
